Objects and Stories with Jo Mabbutt

Joanna Mabbutt is a Liveryman of the Worshipful Company of Painter-Stainers and Freeman of the City of London, a decorative artist who gilds antique lace and crochet. She works to commission, sells through galleries and exhibitions and collaborates with other designers.
Over the centuries the Livery Companies of the City of London have accumulated fascinating treasures which represent their craft and trade, reveal their history and their vital importance to the commercial life of the City of London. Rare and curious items reveal the stories behind some of the world’s oldest crafts and guilds.

10.00: Lecture 1 The beginnings of London’s medieval guilds, early pageants, acquisitions, some prominent City figures in the charity and education world and the peak of the Livery development.
11.00: Coffee with homemade shortbread
11.30: Lecture 2 The rebuilding of the City after the Great Fire and the changing roles of Livery Companies.

Illuminated Manuscripts with Imogen Corrigan

After serving nearly 20 years in the British army, Imogen Corrigan studied Anglo-Saxon and Medieval History and Art at the Universities of Kent and Birmingham. She is a Freeman of the City of London, a Member of the Company of Communicators, she currently works as a freelance lecturer.
This special interest day explores the fascinating topic of Illuminated Manuscripts, books that were handwritten and decorated or illustrated in rich colours, including gold or silver, that made the pages shimmer.

11.30: Lecture 2 The Men Behind the Pen: The Life of the Scribe in the Middle Ages
12.30: Lunch (Soup, sandwiches and fresh fruit)
14.00: Lecture 3 The Benedictional of St. Aethelwold This beautifully illustrated document made in the Winchester School of decoration in the 970s, reveals much about the relationship between Æthelwold (Bishop of Winchester) and the young king Edgar.
